तत्प्रतिषेधार्थमेकतत्त्वाभ्यासः
tat-pratiṣedhārtham eka-tattvābhyāsaḥ
To counter them, practise one thing steadily.
Yoga Sutras 1.32 · verse 32 of 196
Unfolding the thread
The remedy for a scattered mind is simple to say and hard to do: pick one point of focus and keep returning to it. A breath, a word, an image, a principle. It hardly matters which. What matters is that it's one. The mind that keeps switching never gets anywhere; the mind that stays with one thing starts to settle.
Try today
Choose one thing to come back to today, perhaps your breath. Each time you notice you've wandered, return to that same thing.
The Echo
The same truth, heard in another tradition
“But one thing is needful.”
