देशबन्धश्चित्तस्य धारणा

deśa-bandhaś cittasya dhāraṇā

Concentration is binding the mind to one place.

Yoga Sutras 3.1 · verse 107 of 196

Unfolding the thread

The third chapter opens with the inner limbs. Dhāraṇā, concentration, is simple to define: tie attention to one place. The breath at the nostrils, the heart, a flame, an image. The mind will wander; concentration is the gentle, repeated tying back.

Try today

Choose one place (the tip of your nose, the centre of your chest) and keep bringing your attention back there for three minutes.

The Echo

The same truth, heard in another tradition
