Autumn
The quiet hour (Brahma Muhurta) is the traditional time for practice, just before sunrise.
त्रयमन्तरङ्गं पूर्वेभ्यः
trayam antar-aṅgaṁ pūrvebhyaḥ
These three are inner limbs, compared with the five before them.
Yoga Sutras 3.7 · verse 113 of 196
Unfolding the thread
Ethics, observances, posture, breath and sense withdrawal are the outer limbs: they prepare the ground. Concentration, meditation and absorption are the inner ones: they are the work itself, done entirely within.
Try today
Notice today where your practice is outer (what you do) and where it is inner (how you attend). Give the inner a little more time.
The Echo
The same truth, heard in another tradition
“The kingdom of God is within you,(1) saith the Lord. Turn thee with all thine heart to the Lord and forsake this miserable world, and thou shalt find rest unto thy soul. Learn to despise outward things and to give thyself to things inward.”
