Though coloured by countless tendencies, the mind exists for another, because it works through combination.

Yoga Sutras 4.24 · verse 186 of 196

Unfolding the thread

The mind is a composite, made of many parts working together. Things made of parts exist for something beyond themselves, the way a house exists for the one who lives in it. The mind, however rich, exists for the Self.

Try today

Thank your mind today, as you would a good servant, for all its work. Then remember whom it serves.

The Echo

The same truth, heard in another tradition

“Everything exists for some end,—a horse, a vine. Why dost thou wonder? Even the sun will say, I am for some purpose.”
