तपःस्वाध्यायेश्वरप्रणिधानानि क्रियायोगः
tapaḥ-svādhyāyeśvara-praṇidhānāni kriyā-yogaḥ
Discipline, self-study and surrender to the divine make up the yoga of action.
Yoga Sutras 2.1 · verse 52 of 196
Unfolding the thread
The second chapter turns practical. Kriyā yoga, yoga in action, has three parts. Tapas is discipline: the heat of doing what's good for you when it isn't easy. Svādhyāya is self-study, through sacred texts and honest reflection. Īśvara-praṇidhāna is surrender: offering the results to something greater than you. Effort, understanding, and letting go, all at once.
Try today
Pick one small discipline for today, read one page that nourishes you, and offer the day's results to something beyond yourself.
The Echo
The same truth, heard in another tradition
“He who knows other men is discerning; he who knows himself is intelligent. He who overcomes others is strong; he who overcomes himself is mighty.”
