Autumn
The quiet hour (Brahma Muhurta) is the traditional time for practice, just before sunrise.
तस्मिन्सति श्वासप्रश्वासयोर्गतिविच्छेदः प्राणायामः
tasmin sati śvāsa-praśvāsayor gati-vicchedaḥ prāṇāyāmaḥ
Once posture is established, prāṇāyāma is the regulation of the flow of breath in and out.
Yoga Sutras 2.49 · verse 100 of 196
Unfolding the thread
With the body settled, attention turns to breath. Prāṇāyāma means extending or regulating the life-force, and here it begins with the movement of breath in and out: noticing it, then gently guiding it, with pauses and length.
Try today
Sit steadily and notice your breath for one minute before trying to change anything.
The Echo
The same truth, heard in another tradition
“The spirit of God hath made me, and the breath of the Almighty hath given me life.”
