The breath moves out, in or is held; observed by place, time and number, it becomes long and subtle.
Yoga Sutras 2.50 · verse 101 of 196
Unfolding the thread
Patanjali describes three movements (exhale, inhale, pause) and three ways of observing them: where you feel the breath, how long it lasts, and how many breaths you count. Watched this way, breathing naturally becomes longer and finer.
Try today
Count ten breaths today, noticing where each one is felt and how long it lasts.
The Echo
The same truth, heard in another tradition
“But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.”
