Autumn

The quiet hour (Brahma Muhurta) is the traditional time for practice, just before sunrise.

न तत्स्वाभासं दृश्यत्वात्

na tat svābhāsaṁ dṛśyatvāt

The mind is not self-luminous, because it is itself something seen.

Yoga Sutras 4.19 · verse 181 of 196

Unfolding the thread

The mind is like the moon: it seems to shine, but its light is borrowed. Because the mind can be observed, it must be lit by something else, the seer. That's one of the strongest arguments in the Sutras.

Try today

Watch a thought appear. Notice that it is seen, and ask what is doing the seeing.

The Echo

The same truth, heard in another tradition

“On heart unless the soul-sun cast a ray, No thought, no picture can its sheen portray.”
