Autumn
The quiet hour (Brahma Muhurta) is the traditional time for practice, just before sunrise.
तज्जपस्तदर्थभावनम्
taj-japas tad-artha-bhāvanam
Repeat it, and dwell on its meaning.
Yoga Sutras 1.28 · verse 28 of 196
Unfolding the thread
Japa means repetition, and Patanjali adds the crucial other half: bhāvanā, feeling into the meaning. Repeating a sound mechanically is like ringing a bell with no clapper. Repeating it while living its meaning lets it do its work, gathering a scattered mind around one point.
Try today
Choose one word that matters to you (Om, peace, thank you) and repeat it ten times slowly, feeling what it means each time.
The Echo
The same truth, heard in another tradition
“Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight”
